June 2020 Volunteer Committee Spotlight

Our Volunteer Committee is made up of some of the strongest leaders within our volunteer program. This committee helps the volunteer staff make decisions, bring feedback about events, and create new ways of making procedure better for the future. We’d love for you to get to know these leaders before the next Musikfest, so each month we’ll spotlight a few members for you!

Q: What inspired you to begin volunteering?
A: Having attended many Arts Quest events, it always looked like a happy place. As a non-profit, volunteers are a major aspect, so I decided to help out. Then I could keep seeing folks smiling at the fests!

Q: What’s your favorite event to volunteer for?
A: I like them all but especially Christkindlmarkt along with Banana Factory First Friday. Visual Arts are so inspiring and creative in both venues.

Q: When you’re not volunteering for ArtsQuest, what do you like to do in your spare time?
A: My other volunteer activities include St. Luke’s Healing Arts (with artist Virginia Abbott of Banana Factory), Celtic Classic, State Theatre and others. I enjoy being outdoors while gardening. hiking, biking, geocaching and kayaking. Watching my teen grandchildren playing sports for Northampton is a great time.

Q: If you could bring any artist to Musikfest, who would it be and why?
A: Years ago I saw Chicago here and it was awesome! Days later I was starting a vacation in Chicago and sang Saturday in the Park along Lake Michigan. What a wonderful group and city!

Q: What do you enjoy most about serving on the Volunteer Committee?
A: Being together with this great group of dedicated leaders is inspiring. They volunteer tirelessly for Arts Quest and Bethlehem along with so many wonderful individuals and groups.

Q: What inspired you to begin volunteering?
A: While growing up, my parents always set an example of being there for others. Although they didn’t choose to volunteer for organizations, they would always be there if someone needed help. For many years, I would go to Musikfest and enjoy it greatly, but like many people, never stopped to think of what made it run. When the realization of how many people it took to make it happen finally sank in, I felt I wanted to be a part of something big which made others happy and helped the Bethlehem community.

Q: What’s your favorite event to volunteer for?
A: I can’t deny I love Musikfest, and you’ll see me volunteering there every day, usually as a Site Supervisor. But honestly, Christkindlmarkt is my favorite. I enjoy working the Customer Service Desk. It’s a great opportunity to meet many first timers to Bethlehem, talk about ArtsQuest, and sing the praises of all the Lehigh Valley has to offer.

Q: When you’re not volunteering for ArtsQuest, what do you like to do in your spare time?
A: Prior to retirement in 2014, my work didn’t afford much spare time, although I did get to travel extensively and was able to develop an art photography business through which I exhibited in many juried Art shows. Since then, I have volunteered with Historic Bethlehem, Celtic Classic, the Lehigh South Side Boosters, Godfrey Daniels, Spring on the South Side and the Christmas City craft beer and wine festivals. I’ve also served on our condo Board and on my township Planning Commission. On rare occasion, I take my golf clubs for a walk. What spare time?

Q: If you could bring any artist to Musikfest, who would it be and why?
A: I’m a blues man, and I’d love to see Joe Bonamassa along with Beth Hart. The ultimate guitar with a great vocal accompaniment. Also in recent years, I’ve come to enjoy Caro Emerald, a European songbird who I find extremely easy and enjoyable to listen to.

Q: What do you enjoy most about serving on the Volunteer Committee?
A: Without a doubt, the people … the dedication, friendliness and concern of my fellow committee members; the ArtsQuest staff and their recognition, appreciation and concern for the volunteers; and of course, the volunteer group, the best in the world, no holds barred. Having made numerous new friends through volunteering, this is a chance for me to help make the experience as good as it can be for the unselfish people who give their time to make AQ and the Bethlehem area a place to be proud of.
