10 Week Class

Thursdays, September 11-November 13 | 6-9 p.m.

In this class, students will learn the basics to paint portraits of animals and people. Students will explore basic human proportions, using the grid system to create a base drawing for their portrait painting, mixing their own traditional gesso, and basic painting techniques during this class, and will leave with a finished portrait to treasure! Students will receive their own brush set and set of paints as part of the class, which then then get to keep.

Students are asked to provide photo references for portraits and bring printed photos to class. Things to keep in mind when selecting photo references:

  • The face should be in a resting pose. No large smiles.
  • The face should be in a good neutral light without harsh shadows or light.
  • Women should not have on heavy makeup or foundation which will keep you from seeing the natural coloration of the face.

Additional items needed for class that students should bring with them: A small 5 1/2” X 8” sketchbook for drawing various types of faces in different styles for class paintings. An apron or old shirt. Painting can be a bit messy!

Gable Young studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts and the University of The Arts in a dual enrollment program. They received a BFA, Certificate of painting, and a PA teachers certification.

Young has continued to teach both privately and in schools. They worked for 8 years making backdrops for high school plays and musicals which stretched their creative imagination and speed of work.

Currently Gable travels doing juried art/craft shows and continues to work in both clay and oils. The most recent focus in on clay vessels which are altered and added to with hand-built additions and political themes. Both their paintings and clay pieces are highly influenced by nature in color and form.
