Artists have been painting "En Plein Air" or "in open air" since the advent of tubed paints... Nothing speaks to mindful observation of the visual landscape like being out among the elements. During this two week course, students will gain familiarity with adapting to changing light sources, applying paint more directly and budgeting their time differently in order to accommodate the changing environmental factors, and engaging with their paintings in a method that attunes to the atmosphere they are trying to capture. Embrace your inner Van Gogh as we soak up the sun, navigate the variations in conditions, and adapt our paintings and processes to the natural world!

Alexandra Schnabel is a painter and art instructor who lives and works in Bucks County PA. Alexandra discovered her passion for oil painting at the Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Arts, and went on to earn her BFA from Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts. She now enjoys creating artwork that explores the human condition and the variable emotional experience in response to the visual world, with themes that ponder the self and relationship with how we engage with the world around us. Her paintings have been shown at venues such as The Allentown Art Museum, The Kimmel Center, Lehigh University and Phillips Mill Galleries. She teaches a variety of community based classes locally as well as private lessons and creativity mentorship programs out of her home studio.

Location Information:
The Main Library is located at 11 W Church St. in Bethlehem. There is free on-street parking around the library, most with 1 or 2-hour time limits. On weekdays after 5 p.m. and all day on Saturdays, parking is available in the garage beneath the library. To get to the Cohen Room, enter the library through the main entrance and pass through the double doors. The Cohen Room is on the left, across from the circulation desk.
