August 2021 Volunteer Spotlight

Each month, our volunteer committee decides on volunteers to spotlight! In August 2021, we selected someone who has been a consistent helper despite the uncertainty of these past few years: Alan King!

Q: What inspired you to begin volunteering?
A: In 2017, I began attending Musikfest and the Levitt Pavilion series on a regular basis. I fell in love with the programming and the abundance of free live music. I felt like I wanted to give back and contribute to the organization that was bringing me so much enjoyment.

Q: What is your favorite memory from volunteering at an ArtsQuest event?
A: At the end of one of my first “Virtual Musikfest” shifts last year, a lawn spot attendee thanked me for volunteering! That really struck me.

Q: Do you volunteer anywhere else besides ArtsQuest?
A: For the last 15 years or so, I have been a volunteer member of a hot air balloon crew, most recently for a local pilot but also at festivals in a few states.

Q: When you’re not volunteering for ArtsQuest, what do you like to do in your spare time?
A: Landscaping and gardening, traveling to new places, ballooning, rooting for the Eagles and Penn State, attending concerts and listening to my CD collection.

Q: If you could pick any act to play at Musikfest, who would you pick and why?
A: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, because I think we could all use 3.5 hours of a classic rock diversion!

Q: Do you have any advice for new volunteers?
A: Don’t feel like you have to commit to an unreasonable number of hours. Do what you can. Every volunteer hour is sincerely appreciated and recognized by ArtsQuest staff.
