New Mural to Be Unveiled in Support of SouthSide Community Bringing Art and Beauty to Bethlehem — One Mural at a Time

Bethlehem, Lehigh Valley, PA. July 16, 2025 – ArtsQuest invites you to attend the official unveiling of a new public mural on Friday, July 18 at 4:00 p.m. at 331 Broadway, Bethlehem, PA. The mural was designed by local artist Carla Majczan in collaboration with current and past students from East Hills Middle School and was created to raise awareness about food insecurity within Bethlehem’s SouthSide.

“I am hoping that this mural brings awareness to the importance of communities coming together to work towards a common goal,” commented Carla Majczan. “It’s evident that sometimes people are unaware of what is happening right in their own neighborhood and just as this mural was created with the help of people from the direct neighborhood, it also involved people from the surrounding community, all coming together to assist in bringing this to life – same way it’s important to have us join together to help bring accessibility and awareness to the importance of healthy food. We thrive in a community, helping our neighbors whether nearby or far.”

This new mural, located directly across from the Ideal Food Basket supermarket, was selected by a committee composed of representatives from ArtsQuest, The Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission, Lehigh University Art Galleries and the SouthSide Arts District. It was all made possible through funding from ArtsQuest and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), developed in partnership with the SouthSide Arts District.

“ArtsQuest is thrilled to unveil the newest mural on Bethlehem’s SouthSide,” said Lisa Harms, Senior Director of Visual Arts and Education at ArtsQuest. “We received over twenty submissions through an open call for artists, and we’re very excited that Carla’s incredible design was selected. The mural itself is beautiful and is intended to highlight the importance of access to healthy food for all members of our community. Carla’s design illustrates this concept visually through vibrant colors and realistic renderings of fruits and vegetables. We are grateful to Carla, her students and members of our community for making this mural come to life!”

The new mural not only celebrates the rich cultural identity of South Bethlehem but also serves as a call to action to support local access to nutritious food and community unity. As part of the unveiling, ArtsQuest will be organizing a food donation collection for New Bethany Ministries, with location details to be confirmed. Following the unveiling, guests are invited to continue the celebration at a community gathering hosted by Seven Sirens Brewing Company.
