Artist Statement:
As an independent and self-taught artist, I enjoy creating work that represents movement and light, especially the distortion of light and reflection. My unique style of painting is a result of being primarily self-taught. Through trial and error, I’ve learned that my best paintings convey memories or represent a moment in time; in oil, my work tends to be more classical in style; in acrylic, I paint more assertively and employ outlines and high-contrast elements to ‘pop’ key elements off the canvas. My personal projects, done for my own fulfillment and professional development, are usually large-scale works that focus on the brilliance and power of color. I am drawn to close-cropped themes with a modern, obvious edge. As a former graphic designer, I often find myself incorporating graphic design ‘rules’ and styles into my paintings — clean lines, use of strong contrasting elements and classic, bright colors that attract the eye. Most of my portfolio evokes this illustrative style, and I enjoy depicting everyday scenes or objects in this exaggerated and hyper-saturated style.
