Soft Pastels: A Study in Still Life
This class is designed for novice to intermediate level illustration artists. Whether you’re a beginner who’s dabbled in stick figures, or a practiced artist who is interested in picking up a new medium, both are welcome! During our 6 weeks together we will cover the foundations of still life; value, composition and color, with a big emphasis on the color. Soft pastels are a distinguished medium for their unrivalled concentration of pigment. The result is a stunning color intensity. Because soft pastels are a dry medium, they come with their own challenges. Our lessons will cover techniques in application, layering and blending. It’s expected the each student will finish this course with one or more pieces of work, as there will be multiple still life stations set up simultaneously. Students are encouraged to engage with each of the subjects, but it’s also acceptable to commit time from multiple classes to one station. Autonomy is an essential component of artistic expression, so each student is encouraged to work at their own pace. My hope is that, through this course, I can share my exuberance for soft pastels.

Daniel Comiskey
Dan Comiskey is a painter and illustrator who lives in Bethlehem PA. A self taught artist, Dan has been working with soft pastels for 9 years now, as well as a variety of other mediums. For him, artistic expression is an emotional outlet. His favorite subjects are landscapes, and much of his time that is not spent painting, is spent adventuring in search of a new source of inspiration. So much of Dan’s motivation to create comes from the desire to give to others. This means there have been many gifted pet portraits, sentimental landscapes, and unique decorative trinkets. He also does commissioned work, and exhibits locally.
