Artist Statement:
Photography is more than a way of documenting what is in front of me. It is a way to explore the world and discover relationships among light, form, texture, and space. My work spans landscapes, nature, architecture, travel, and people. Across these subjects, I am guided by curiosity and an interest in helping viewers see familiar places differently.
I am especially drawn to what I call “the un-obvious”: the geometry of a building, light falling across an abandoned structure, patterns within a landscape, or a small detail that might be missed in a larger scene. Some of my most meaningful photographs come from looking beyond the first composition, slowing down, and following what catches my attention.
My photography has taken me around the world, including opportunities to document people and historic events. Yet I find just as much inspiration close to home. The Lehigh Valley’s industrial heritage, architecture, communities, and natural spaces offer an ongoing source of subjects and stories. I am interested not only in what a place looks like, but also in the character and history it carries.
Technique is important, but it serves the image. I use both established photographic methods and newer computational tools when they help me communicate an idea. My objective is not to demonstrate equipment; it is to make photographs that invite a closer look and convey a sense of place.
Teaching and community involvement are also central to my practice. Through workshops, presentations, mentoring, and exhibitions, I share what I have learned and encourage others to develop their own visual voice. Nine years of service on the ArtsQuest Visual Arts Board reinforced my appreciation for the role arts organizations play in supporting artists and connecting creative work with the public.
I value the exchange of ideas among artists working in different media. I hope to contribute to that kind of community while continuing to explore the photographic possibilities found in both extraordinary destinations and everyday surroundings.
