Artist Statement:
I have been working with wood since I was a small child. I went back to college in my late twenties and that is when I discovered that wood could be used to make art. That is when I also discovered that there were incredible machines to help one do woodworking…front and center…the lathe.
Discovering woodworking machines. In college led me down the path of wood art as opposed to woodworking. One does not turn in copies in art school, one is always encouraged to turn in original work. In art school I was fortunate to have met John Stolz the wood instructor. Then to tour the Wharton Esherick Museum with Miriam as the tour guide. That opened my mind to possibilities and then Alert Lecoff who introduced me to the woodturning world and, most importantly to my career, Stephen Hogbin. My work looks like it does because I was fortunate enough to briefly stand on the shoulders of Giants and got a view of what was possible if one worked at one’s craft.
