Artist Statement:
Over the years of creating imagery, I have become fascinated with religious iconography in relation to the development of art making throughout history. I had a moment of realization early in my experience as an artist when I discovered Joseph Campbell. He found correlations between the stories within all world religions and highlighted the importance of story telling in art. I love the concept of artists being the conduit between this world and a potential higher power or more complex level of thought.
“To have a sacred place is an absolute necessity for anybody today. You must have a room or a certain hour of the day or so, where you do not know who your friends are, you don’t know what you owe anybody or what they owe you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be.” (Joseph Campbell)
Story telling has always been part of my work but I also enjoy the natural phenomena of the material being applied to the surface. I like to work on several pieces in unison jumping one to another. I have an interest in getting lost in the process and finding a space to disconnect from the world for a while. It forces me to live in the moment and make decisions free of scrutiny or discernment. There are always moments of chaos and uncertainty in the process but it always settles with a greater sense of clarity.
