Portrait Drawing

Learn the fundamentals of portrait drawing in this four-week course. During the first two weeks, students will focus on drawing individual facial features—including the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears—while developing an understanding of facial proportions, structure, and value. In the final two weeks, these skills will be applied to creating a finished portrait. Students may work from mirrors provided in class or from a reference photograph of their choice, whether it is a self-portrait, a portrait of a family member or friend. Demonstrations will focus on graphite and charcoal techniques, but students are welcome to work in the media of their choice. Throughout the course, we will also look at examples from both historical and contemporary artists to explore a variety of approaches to portraiture.
