SteelStacks Improv Comedy Festival Workshop

Sharpen your music improv skills! Know the basics of musical improv and ready to try some new things? Shulie Cowen and Jonathan Dinerstein (director and music director of Opening Night: The Improvised Musical!®) will teach an intermediate music improv workshop, with a focus on group work, and different song styles.

SHULIE COWEN teaches improv to kids, senior citizens, and everyone in between.  After teaching for over 15 years at The Second City Hollywood and iO West, Shulie now travels the USA and the world teaching acting and improv at festivals and schools, including Camp Improv Utopia Yosemite, The Florida State Thespian Festival, and the Shanghai American School.  She is a graduate of Northwestern University, a former member of The Second City National Touring Company, and an original cast member of Schoolhouse Rock Live!.  Shulie studied improv in Chicago at The Second City Training Center, The Annoyance Theatre, and at iO Chicago with Del Close.  She currently directs and performs in Opening Night: The Improvised Musical!® (the longest running improvised musical in Los Angeles–and possibly the world!) and with the improv team EST.  Film and television credits include Mr. Mayor, Parks and Recreation, 2 Broke Girls, Liza on Demand, and How I Met Your Mother.

Jonathan Dinerstein is a versatile composer of music for film and television. His recent credits include scores for Audible’s star-studded audio drama Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, Alan Tudyk’s TV comedy series Con Man, and many feature films. He’s also written music for countless television commercials, for a cutting edge Emmy Award-winning online series, for nationally syndicated PBS TV documentaries, and many diverse other projects. Also an accomplished musical director and pianist, Jonathan can regularly be heard playing for musical theater, cabaret, and jazz in Los Angeles, and has performed frequently for comedy shows at Second City, ComedySportz, and for the long-running hit staged show The Thrilling Adventure Hour; he currently plays with the acclaimed L.A. mainstay Opening Night: The Improvised Musical!

Jonathan co-hosts the film music podcast Settling the Score, and is a four-day Jeopardy! champion.
