Creative Mending

Want to turn old or damaged clothing into fun, wearable art? Join us for this relaxing workshop and learn how to do it! Whether you want to save your favorite sweater or reduce the environmental impact of fast fashion by extending the life of your clothes, this class is perfect for you. No sewing experience is required – you’ll learn different hand sewing techniques to repair and decorate clothes, bags, and other fabric items. Did you know that over 34 billion pounds of textiles end up in US landfills every year (over 17 million tons)? Not only is mending good for the environment, it’s also a great way to relax and unwind after a long day.

Katrina Heebner is a Bethlehem artist who works in a variety of artistic media, specializing in fiber, wood, and paper arts. She graduated from Moravian University with a Bachelor’s degree in Art and Psychology where her art studies focused on photography, painting, and drawing. She is a Certified Activity Director and spent 12 years working at a skilled nursing facility providing recreational programs for the elderly. As a teaching artist at the Banana Factory, she enjoys teaching a wide range of art forms to children as well as adults. The past few years, she has been exploring the combination of art and technology, such as sewable electronics and using a CO2 laser as an art tool. She is a volunteer board member at Make Lehigh Valley, a non-profit makerspace in Allentown whose mission is to facilitate and encourage people to make things.
