'Fighters' Artist Talk

"Fighters" showcases the faces and voices of young boxers training at the Allentown Boxing and Youth Program located at 402 Ridge St., Allentown.
Through a collaboration of the arts of photography and storytelling, Allentown resident Marco Calderon and Allentown native Emily Thiel capture the essence and heart behind these talented and dedicated youth.
When asked, many people connect boxing directly with violence. Fighters takes a deeper look into the driving forces behind those who train and suggests a more complicated understanding of the sport and its role in the lives of local residents.
Inside the walls of the boxing gym, these young boxers reach their goals through hard work, sweat and determination. The support and encouragement of the trainers and atmosphere they create at the gym itself bring young people from our community – Allentown, Pa. to win matches in the ring. Boxing provides these young men and women an additional pathway to many forms of success, including the opportunity to enter the professional boxing world.
The fighters balance many roles-- boxer, child, student and sometimes caregiver, as some are providing for themselves or their family.
Fighters reveals there is more to the work out and discipline of perfecting jabs, footwork, combinations, and coordination that keep young people coming back to the Allentown Boxing and Youth Program. It is the life training the gym's current Director Luis Melendez provides that fuels this community, formed by those who show up to train daily, to get up again, and again and never be show up to train daily, to get up again, and again and never be knocked down.
The world of boxing is one of dedication, focus and training. The boxers at the Allentown Boxing and Youth Program allow their focus in the sport to translate into success, not only in the ring, but also in school, work and their personal lives. Boxing encourages these athletes to think about their futures, to set goals and to achieve them.
Fighters recognizes the drive of the individual and reminds us as a community to make space for youth to tell their own story.
