Interns Wanted

Here at ArtsQuest, we're looking for creative, energetic, and driven interns that are passionate about the arts, music and education.  If you want to be involved in the day-to-day inner workings of a dynamic and entrepreneurial non-profit arts and entertainment organization, work hard and have fun while doing so while earning college credit in the process, we want YOU!

Below you'll find a quick reference guide to the application and selection process and timelines for the program as well as a snapshot of some of our internship opportunities.

ArtsQuest Internship FAQ's

  • Yes, all interns must be currently enrolled in an academic program, either undergraduate or graduate during the semester in which he/she participates.
  • Yes, all interns must be eligible for earning college credit during the semester in which he/she participates in order to qualify for consideration.
  • Yes, our internships are unpaid.
  • Yes, you will be challenged.
  • Yes, you will make new friends.
  • Yes, you will get a real-life project-based experience that you can take ownership of and be able to talk about with prospective employers...and WOW them!
  • And yes...you will have fun while doing it!

Application Requirements

All applicants for Internships must be:

  • currently enrolled in a credit or degree program, either part-time or full-time, undergraduate or graduate, during the semester for which you are applying for an internship
  • must be eligible for receiving college credit through your educational institution

Timing is Everything

  • Applications for consideration for ArtsQuest Summer Internships are accepted December 1 through April 1
  • Applications for consideration for ArtsQuest Fall/Winter Internships are accepted April 1 through September 1
  • Applications for consideration for ArtsQuest Spring Internships are accepted July 1 through December 1

Applicants are required to send the following information for consideration to Cindy Karchner, Director of Human Resources at ckarchner@artsquest.org:

  • Current Resume
  • Cover letter stating the following:
    1. reason for applying for the internship with ArtsQuest
    2. which department or area you are interested in
    3. the necessary requirements for receiving college credit through your educational institution (# of required hours, paperwork completion process, your advisor's name, phone # and e-mail address)
    4. How you expect to benefit from the program
  • 1-3 Letters of Recommendation from a Student Advisor, Professor or former or current Supervisor regarding your work habits, skills or abilities that might apply to your particular internship

Selection Process

Summer Internships

  • Summer Resume Review, Interviews and Selection, through April 30
  • Summer Internship Period runs June (1st week) through August (through the duration of Musikfest). Students applying for Summer Internships must be available during this timeframe

Internships include the following whenever possible:

  • Intern Orientation/Meet and Greet
  • Mid-Term Review and Networking Event
  • End of Term Review and Appreciation Event

Fall /Winter Internships

  • Resume Review, Interviews and Selection, through October
  • Fall Internship Period runs from September (2nd week) through December (2nd week) or Winter Internship Period –October through January. Students applying for Fall/Winter Internships must be available during this timeframe

Internships include the following whenever possible:

  • Intern Orientation/Meet and Greet
  • Mid-Term Review and Networking Event
  • End of Term Review and Appreciation Event

Spring Internships

  • Resume Review, Interviews and Selection, October through December.
  • Spring Internships run from the 3rd week of January through the 3rd week in April. Students applying for Spring Internships must be available during this timeframe

Internships include the following whenever possible:

  • Intern Orientation/Meet and Greet
  • Mid-Term Review and Networking Event
  • End of Term Review and Appreciation Event

Internship opportunities

Community Resources Internship

Assist in coordination of volunteer activities for ArtsQuest such as: Banana Factory, SteelStacks, Christkindlmarkt, Musikfest and other future events!

  • Preparation of materials for training
  • Coordinate logistics required to train volunteers
  • Coordinate food requirements as necessary for the volunteers who set-up and take-down an event
  • Assist in scheduling and preparing materials for volunteers
  • Prepare correspondence, answer questions and handle volunteer requests as it relates to their schedules
  • Be available to assist on site with events as necessary

Corporate Relations Internship

Interest in marketing, event management, sales, and the sponsorship industry

  • Potential sponsor/partner research includes:
    - Understanding our programming and helping to find local, regional and national companies that might be a good fit.
    - Conducting extensive research on potential prospects: what are their areas of giving (environmental, sports, arts & culture, etc.), who is the contact person/decision maker, and what are their giving guidelines (submission deadlines, etc).
    - What are other festivals and venues doing and who are their relationships with that we might be able to tap into? This project has enormous potential to have a huge impact on helping us to secure new sponsors.
  • Research Database Accuracy:
    Assist in verifying who we have in our database, are they still at the company and if not, who is the new contact person?
  • Involved in all aspects of the operation of the Corporate Relations department:
    - Online research on potential partners/sponsors
    - Developing Proposals
    - Coordination of hospitality events
    - Fulfillment of Sponsorships
    - Distribution of Tickets
    - Possibly some sales, and some administrative tasks

Qualifications: Detail oriented, well organized, above average computer proficiency - Excel, Word, Power Point; marketing, advertising, business, sales, or similar interest; some knowledge of event management helpful.

Hospitality Internship

Assist Vice President of Hospitality in creating relationships with corporations, alumni associations, tour operators and social organizations to encourage them to utilize the Banana Factory, SteelStacks, Christkindlmarkt and Musikfest venues, programs for entertainment opportunities.

Good communication, customer service and computer skills a must!

Marketing/Public Relations Internship

Assist the ArtsQuest Marketing Team in all its endeavors. Internship activities include:

  • Writing news releases
  • Writing website copy
  • Newsletter articles
  • Creation and management of special promotions
  • On-site marketing
  • Assisting and offering input in all forms of visual marketing, from Internet development to print advertising.
  • Good writing, communications and public relations skills helpful.

Web Design/Graphic Design

This internship requires a student who enjoys working with the organization's e-marketing efforts for its multiple websites.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with ArtsQuest staff for content management and design of electronic marketing
  • Assist with development, design and maintain content of websites
  • Participate in e-mail marketing campaigns, social networking efforts and online community management activities

Knowledge of:

  • Intermediate/Advanced knowledge of HTML and CSS is required
  • Must be familiar with Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver
  • Knowledge of Javascript and JQuery is a plus

Performing Arts Internship

  • Assist with the coordination of all performers and event production as they relate to Musikfest and Christkindlmarkt
  • Assist in review of materials submitted by artists, coordination of maintaining on-going performer files, and review of performer contracts as they relate to producing events
  • Involvement with securing necessary resources to fulfill performer riders and contracts
  • Assist with sound and light companies and securing staging companies
  • Involvement with visual aspects of events, i.e. stage layout/design, visual site design

Celebrations Internship

  • Year round planning of "College Weekend"
  • Plan concerts and entertainment for the weekend
  • Gather information and research all the necessary aspects to properly plan the event
  • Social Outreach Projects including opportunities to interact with other non-profit organizations and developing celebration events
  • Researching, developing, planning and promoting holiday and non-traditional celebrations for ArtsQues's new Performing Arts Center, Steel Stacks: The center will have a two screen cinema for independent films, a music cafe and other event space which includes a large common area, a media lounge, an outdoor plaza and music pavilion with audience area for 2500 and a tented area for concerts and festival programs.
  • Assist in event and communication development as well as working with local organizations and community groups who are interested in being a part of these celebrations and daily activities at Steel Stacks.
  • Skill sets required include organizational ability, creativity and good communication. A basic knowledge of the Lehigh Valley is helpful.

Arts Administration Internship

Hands-on experience and exposure in the administration of programs and gallery exhibitions, curating, handling, preparation, installation and maintenance of arts objects and an introduction to museum studies.

  • Coordination of educational programs, school programs, tuition classes
  • Coordination of special events and fundraiser preparation
  • Coordination of research for special projects
  • Assist with upcoming markets, craft components, and festivals

Arts and Education/ Banana Factory Internship

  • Lehigh Valley Photography Month, November 2011 and 2012
  • research photo clubs, venues, and institutions
  • research, approach, and finalize event venues
  • compile contact lists for marketing purposes
  • communicate with and send material via InVision

Glassworks Studio Internship

  • Coordination of events, writing and executing maintenance schedules, prepping tools and materials required in running a successful glassworks studio
  • Coordination of First Friday Events every first Friday of every month during the semester in which you are interning
  • Hot Shop Clean Up and Maintenance Schedule, a ritual of maintaining a successful glass studio
  • Prep and Set-up for in-house or visiting Glass artists
  • Assist in any glasswork that may need to be done throughout the semester

Development/Membership Internship

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting in research of potential sponsorship partners to expand sponsorship and membership development
  • Database mining and customer research
  • Database maintenance, input, and clean-up
  • Developing content for monthly membership communication and event solicitations
  • Working with ArtsQuest staff to coordinate upcoming membership events
  • Processing and compiling membership materials
  • Providing assistance at ArtsQuest events
  • Administrative tasks (as needed)

A qualified candidate will be detail-oriented, possess strong organizational skills, computer proficiency, and have strong communication skills. Experience with The Raiser's Edge a plus!

Human Resources Internship

Coordination of the Spring, Summer or Fall Internship Programs

Tasks include:

  • Setting up Meet & Greets and Networking Events
  • Handling the paperwork that the interns need for college credit
  • Communication and follow-up with interns, supervisors and mentors for feedback on the program

Masters Level Intern Project

For Business, Marketing, Finance or Economics, Arts or other related majors. Work together with Senior Level Management at ArtsQuest. Focus on researching funding grants, and national sponsorships for Job Creation, Economic Development, Arts and Culture and Tourism in the Non-Profit Sector, where the largest percentage of job growth has been in the past years.

Research funding streams or grants available for the following:

  • Programs, Grants, corporations or organizations and institutions within the continental United States who are willing to support job creation, economic development, arts and culture and tourism.
  • The search should include a full description of the type of funding, expected outcomes, and any other pertinent information including target areas of growth, previous history of support, revenue generated, number of people hired, etc.
  • Research of historical data with regard to ArtsQuest including, but not limited to, the economic, social, and cultural impact of ArtsQuest on Bethlehem and the Lehigh Valley region from 1984 to present.
  • Research publications, both print and electronic, that will accept submissions relating to: job creation, urban revitalization, community building, arts and economic development, development of arts facilities in low-income neighborhoods, impact of festivals, arts culture, and arts facilities on urban revitalization.
  • Consider the following sources: national corporations, academics, public officials, realtors, builders, developers, organizations, non-profit organizations involved in urban development, planners, consultants, public agencies, real estate tax groups, appraisers, urban land institute, public official organizations like League of Cities, arts organizations like Americans for the Arts, organization of bankers, lenders, the New Market Tax Credit community, organization of merchants, retailers, restaurants, downtown organizations, educational groups, colleges, universities.
