Archetype
Edward Weston
Four Group f.64 Photographers
November 4-20 & 27
Group f.64 arose from meetings of like minded photographers at "683" gallery, established by Willard Van Dyke and Mary Jeannette Edwards at 683 Brockhurst St., Oakland, CA.
The founding members were Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, John Paul Edwards, Sonya Noskowiak, Willard Van Dyke and Edward Weston. Although Group f.64 was short lived, having disbanded by the end of 1935, its legacy continues to this day.
The Group f.64 Manifesto was articulated and presented for the Group's first exhibition at the H.M. de Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco, in 1932. It states in part, "The members of Group f.64 believe that photography, as an art form, must develop along lines defined by the actualities and limitations of the photographic medium, and must always remain independent of ideological conventions of art and aesthetics that are reminiscent of a period and culture antedating the growth of the medium itself."
"The Group will appreciate information regarding any serious work in photography that has escaped its attention, and is favorable towards establishing itself as a Forum of Modern Photography."
Edward Nowak
Double-Sided: Work In Progress/Show As Process
November 4-20 & 27
This show is about the experience of looking at photographs as much as it is about the photographs themselves. When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change. You are invited to take an active role exploring the elements of visual syntax that inform our visual literacy and how we perceive the image "made" on paper as distinct from what was in front of the camera when it was "taken." Not only are you invited to change the way you look at individual images in the show, but the show as a whole, and to actually change what images are displayed. You may select up to five images to reveal a different image on the back, and experience the effect it has on your perception, not only of the newly revealed image, but the images around it- how often an image is judged by the company it keeps!
Nowak's show will open with 50 images, and more will be added each week, with the opportunity to view as many as 250 different images. Work can be purchased right off the wall for $94.34 plus tax.

"Sense of Sound"- Larry Fink
Larry Fink was commissioned by Lafayette College to document the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra to celebrate the 25th anniversary season of the Williams Center for the Arts performing arts and gallery program and Orpheus' 22nd year of Williams Center concerts. As a result, Larry documented a number of the orchestra's rehearsals in New York and performances at Lafayette over a 13-month period that started in January 2008.
Fink is a master of social photography, photojournalism and an educator. Through his expert use of off-camera, hand-held flash he captures subtleties in social interactions which reveal a full range of emotions not only between his subjects but between photographer and subject.
